"Holograph, signed. Title devised by cataloger. Boston Public Library (Rare Books Department) manuscript composed in black ink on white paper with an embossed image of the United States Capitol building surrounded by the words \"Congress\" and \"A.P.Co\" in the head- spine corner of each page. Along the head edge of the first page, the phrases \"Add Anti-Slave refund\", \"Dont Cut!\", \"From Hon. Charles Sumner\", and \"98\" are all written in pencil. Above the salutation, the number \"155\" is also written in pencil. Throughout the letter, certain words are repeated in pencil, in a different handwriting, above Sumner's writing. Along the head edge of the third page, \"108\" is written in pencil. On verso, in the head- spine corner, \"Charles Sumner, Boston. Dec. 1, 1863.\" is written in pencil."
