"Circular letter (printed matter). This manuscript consists of two letters. (These two letters were reprinted together in the March 27, 1873 issue of the Boston Journal, the March 27, 1873 issue of the Boston Traveller, and the March 26, 1873 issue of the Boston Transcript.) The first letter is by Edmund Quincy and thirty-eight other close friends of William Lloyd Garrison. They urge Garrison to write an autobiography believing \"such a narrative would furnish the most valuable material possible, as to the matters of which it would treat, for the future historian of this country.\" The second letter is a reply by William Lloyd Garrison, on March 17, 1873, to his esteemed friends, including Edmund Quincy, Samuel E. Sewall, Oliver Johnson, John G. Whittier, Gerrit Smith, Maria Weston Chapman, and Lucretia Mott. William Lloyd Garrison is gratified and complimented by their request that he write an autobiography. Garrison explains that his poor health has not permitted him to write either a history of the anti-slavery struggle or his autobiography. The second page of this manuscript is a duplicate, except containing editorial notations."
