Chapman said: \"He joined a Massachusetts battallion & afterwards underwent hardships in his country's service from which he never recovered...\" The deceased was a member of the executive committee of the Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Society and \"a devoted friend of William Lloyd Garrison & his associates.\""
