On the first page, there are also notations in pencil including a double line and quotation marks before the phrase \"I have ...\" as well as a comma added after \"St. Louis.\" On the second page, the phrase \"G.T. Springfield, Ill., December 1, 1864\" is written along the head edge, and a vertical line cuts through the signature and the last few lines of the letter, both in pencil."
