The bulk of the English working class and the most eminent Englishmen have been \"all along on your side.\" Richard Cobden, who is \"the most eminent man in the nation, was always a staunch friend of the North.\" Webb also names Bright, Tennyson, Mill, Hughes, and Professor Newman as staunch supporters. John Elliott Cairnes came to Richard D. Webb's office in a state of exaltation about the fall of Richmond. Webb inquires about Caroline Weston's acquaintance. Webb sympathizes with Wendell Phillips in his views on Louisiana, but thinks it unwise of him to be so ready to quarrel with England."
