"Holograph, signed. The beginning of this letter is missing. Richard Davis Webb presumably wrote this letter to Anne Warren Weston. Richard Davis Webb says Samuel May agrees that the course of the British government is right, but that he expects England to sympathize with \"the various incidents of an antislavery tendency.\" Richard D. Webb thinks these can be known only to readers of anti-slavery papers. Nine-tenths of the American visitors to England are \"either openly pro-slavery or apologists for the system.\" Richard D. Webb enumerates the reasons for the lack of sympathy for the North. There is a large wealthy class of merchants and manufacturers to whom the supply of cotton is \"as the breath of life.\" The majority of the English middle class are averse to slavery. The general view is sceptical of an \"army of volunteers imperfectly officered.\" Richard D. Webb expresses admiration for Harriet Martineau. The Life of John Brown, compiled by Richard Davis Webb and his wife, has just been published."
