"Copy of letter. Whereabouts of original manuscript unknown. William Lloyd Garrison writes to Aaron Cooley: \"It is not in my power to obtain for you the sum you wish to raise, either as a gift or a loan. At present, I am straitened in my own circumstances, and therefore am unable to do for you what I otherwise would be glad to do.\" An appeal to Wendell Phillips would be useless at this time due to the many requests of money directed to him. Garrison remains indebted to Aaron Cooley for his rescue in 1835 and will not forget him."
