"Clipping (information artifact). This newspaper article, \"The Late Mr. John Mawson. Letters from W. Lloyd Garrison,\" consists of two letters written by William Lloyd Garrison to Joseph Cowen, Jr., dated Jan. 8, 1868 and Jan. 12, 1868. In both letters Garrison pays tribute to his friend, the recently deceased John Mawson, an abolitionist from Newcastle, England. Garrison writes: \"My sorrow is too profound, my horror of mind too great, to find adequate expression in words; yet I cannot allow this melancholy event to pass without attempting to pay, through the medium of the Chronicle, by your permission, at least a brief tribute to the character and member of one who, from an early acquaintance with him to the tragical close of earthly career, inspired me with such personal esteem, respect, attachment, and love as I have accorded to few, in intensity of feeling and on the score of magnetic attraction.\""
