"Holograph, signed with initials. William Lloyd Garrison's stomach is upset, possibly from \"eating some poor ice-cream at dinner.\" He is going to Detroit where he is going to give a lecture for the benefit of a colored association. Thomas Chandler and Dr. Owen have invited him to visit. The weather is mild for November. Garrison writes: \"The West is a mighty theatre for enterprise, labor, business of every kind. It is a vast empire in process of rapid development, and its capacity for growth and prosperity seems boundless. Everything is in the gristle, but a solid and gigantic growth is sure. Our East is fossilized in contrast. We have gone to seed.\" On page four of the manuscript, William Lloyd Garrison writes the postscript in Detroit. He went to see Rev. Dr. Durfee about the National Freedmen's Aid Commission. Garrison's stomach trouble is better."
