notes
"Holograph, signed with initials. Letter written in pencil. William Lloyd Garrison writes: \"A year ago to-day, I was on board of the Arago, on my way to Fort Sumter with Major-General Anderson and party. How many startling and far-reaching events have been crowded into that brief space! How sad and shocking was the assassination of President Lincoln! And how sad and shocking to have such a perfidious successor as President Johnson!\" Garrison doubts if Dr. Dow can do anthing for his arm. He maintains a daily correspondence with Mrs. Garrison with the aid of Frederick Anthony. He refers to his agreement with Ticknor & Fields concerning the history of the anti-slavery movement. He is unable to attend meetings because of his injured arm. Garrison says that \"Charlotte and Henry are enjoying themselves highly at Washington with Harry and Fanny.\" Henry Villard has been sick. Mrs. Garrison's foot is swollen and her left arm is more stiff."
