"Holograph, signed. As a result of a \"bronchial difficulty,\" William Lloyd Garrison is unable to attend the convention at Tremont Temple called to commemorate the martyrdom of John Brown and discuss the methods of abolishing slavery. Therefore, he sets forth his views in this letter and stresses three points: 1) Slavery is to be denounced without compromise, 2) No upholder of slavery should be admitted to church membership or to a position of public trust, and 3) Immediate and unconditional emancipation. Garrison compares John Brown to Lafayette and black followers to Revolutionary War patriots. Garrison believes in the superiority of spiritual weapons."
