Garrison went to the eightieth birthday party of William Ashby in Newburyport, Mass. Garrison was surprised that John Greenleaf Whittier wrote \"a hymn to be sung at the dedication of the 'Memorial Church,' erected by George Peabody, at Georgetown, ...\" Garrison criticizes George Peabody's theological views and his aversion to moral controversy. Garrison says: \"Mr. Peabody always sympathized with the slaveholders of the South as against the abolitionists, and deprecated all agitation of the subject of slavery.\""
