William Lloyd Garrison tells about his train trip: \"There were two ladies in our car---one a fat dowager-looking female---the other younger and less corpulent---probably mother and daughter. As we were stopping a few moments at Canton, a gentleman somewhat jocosely expressed his surprise to them, that they had not waited and attended the Ladies' Anti-Slavery meeting that afternoon. 'Oh,' said they, quite emphatically, 'we are not anti-slavery.' I wanted to say to them---but the fear of being thought impertinent kept me from intruding upon their conversation--- 'What! not anti-slavery? Do you mean to say that you are in favor of slavery?'\" William L. Garrison favors publishing Phelp's letter about the Kaufman affair, in vindication of Mr. Thompson's character. The pro-slavery meeting in Providence was a failure. Four hundred names have already been obtained in Rhode Island for a anti-slavery convention. The bottom half of pages three and four of this letter was cut off."
