"Copy of letter; not William Lloyd Garrison's handwriting. Whereabouts of original manuscript unknown. William Lloyd Garrison thanks Samuel May for his contribution of twenty-five dollars to help the persecuted Southern people of color \"find a refuge at the West.\" Garrison has collected $500. Garrison was invited to meetings in New York and Boston, but he had to decline on account of his health. Henry Villard has gone to Oregon. Francis Jackson Garrison was pleased by Samuel May's letter congratulating him on his engagement to Miss Pratt."
