notes
"Holograph, signed. Because of the cost of the journey, William Lloyd Garrison believes it is better to send a letter to be read at the \"rescue\" anniversary than to be present. He exults in the success of the Woman's Rights Convention in Syracuse. The press has been respectful. Garrison comments: \"What a change, my dear friend, has been wrought since 1840, when the American Anti-Slavery Society was rent asunder, on the sole ground (at least ostensibly) that it was an intolerable outrage, and shockingly unscriptural, to place a woman on one of its committees!\" The Grimke sisters are staying at Samuel Philbrick's house in Brookline. Angelina is ill with a fever. The seceding portion of the Liberty Party, headed by William Goodell, will reassemble in Syracuse. Garrison calls the nomination of William Goodell for the presidency of the United States a farce. Gerrit Smith is still a greenhorn politically."
