He stresses the importance of the freedmen's cause. He was shocked at seeing Mrs. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony \"travelling about the country with that harlequin and semi-lunatic George Francis Train, in advocacy of Woman's Rights---denouncing Republicanism and lauding Copperheadism, and assailing Henry Ward Beecher and Wendell Phillips as no longer true to that cause. They seem to have taken leave of common sense.\""
