notes: "Holograph, signed. On pages 3-4 of this manuscript, there is a letter by William Lloyd Garrison to Samuel Joseph May. Garrison writes: \"I think it best to defer the publication of your letter to me, respecting bro[ther] Lovejoy's conduct, until I hear from you again.\" Lovejoy died as one of the Alton police. Garrison comments about Lovejoy: \"When he fell, and the murderers triumphed, government fell.\" The abolitionists hold to the government and to the right of self-defense. Only those who agree with the Grimkes, Henry C. Wright, and William L. Garrison will lament Lovejoy's conduct. On pages 1-3 of this manuscript, there is a letter by George William Benson to Samuel Joseph May. George W. Benson authorizes their friend Brooks to sell the mulberry trees at the market price. Having been persuaded to take the agency for the the American Anti-Slavery Society in Connecticut, Benson is obliged to leave farming to someone else. The Liberator will be sustained. Benson wishes the Liberator had another printer. Isaac Knapp is too negligent about keeping accounts. He gives news of acquaintances."
