notes
"Holograph, signed. William Lloyd Garrison had a severe inflammation of the right eye. At the same time, his wife was ill and confined to bed. Now, they are both convalescing. Garrison feels flattered by the invitation to lecture in Syracuse on slavery and the war, but has declined on account of the winter weather. Wendell Phillips cannot go to Syracuse because of other engagements. Garrison praises the mayor of Syracuse for upholding free speech in the case of Frederick Douglass. Garrison believes the handbill was designed to stir up a mob. Wendell Phillips Garrison will again try for the appointment at the Latin School. Francis Jackson's sudden death surprised everybody. Francis Jackson left bequests to the anti-slavery movement, the women's rights movement, and to William Lloyd Garrison, Jr., and Francis Jackson Garrison, for their education at Harvard. Aunt Charlotte Coffin has been with William Lloyd Garrison's family a good deal."
