notes
"Holograph. Anne Warren Weston describes a social gathering, at the house of Ellis Gray Loring, to meet Mr. Turnbull, English abolitionist and friend of Harriet Martineau. \"There was so much champagne drunk as quite surprised me.\" Anne rejoiced over Deborah's letter: \"Well done, Bristol Board!\" John A. Collins and Wendell Phillips had success in Tauton, although \"Hopkins Emery opposed them at every step.\" Henry C. Wright, in a letter, said that the course of the Executive Committee at New York is much censured by [William] Goodell, [William] Lawrence Chaplin and especially Alvan Stewart. \"They think that N.Y. folks ought to be deprived of a portion of their power & Alvan Stewart thinks that $10,000 a year is as much as they ought to receive from all the states together.\" Wendell Phillips has been very successful at Fall River. \"[Alanson] St. Clair has made it his business to abuse Maria at Fall River ... [Gilbert. H.] Durfee has threatened not to go to another A. S. [anti-slavery] meeting till there was a new organization.\" Anne recounts in detail the meeting of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society on Wednesday, April 10. \"We have lost all but our honour,\" as the vote was in favour of party approving a direct pledge to the American Anti-Slavery Society. \"We do not feel at all discouraged by our defeat but rejoice that our Fair will at least show a pure communion.\" Wendell Phillips & John A. Collins had \"a very fine time\" at East Weymouth."
