notes
"Holograph, signed. Anne Warren Weston wishes that when Deborah Weston comes to Boston, to remember to bring \"Marie,\" which Mrs. Lydia Maria Child is planning to translate for the cause. [The \"Marie\" referred to is \"Marie, ou L'esclavage aux Etats-Unis\" or \"Marie; or, Slavery in the United States,\" by Gustave Auguste de Beaumont de la Bonniniere, Paris, 1835.] Anne, by referring to her journal, gives a chronological account of happenings, beginning with February 1. Richard Hildreth, spending an evening here, \"tried to speak naturally\" about \"The Slave,\" but could not. Anne to her sorrow \"that he was growing as whiggy as possible,\" and fears that he has come to Boston \"to act for that vile Houghton.\" Anne declines the invitation to the Ellis Gray Lorings hardly considering it right to [sus?]tenance Mrs. Loring in always having her company Sundays. The writer enumerates the people she called on, including Margaret Fuller. Also gives news about Aunt Mary Weston and Caroline Weston. Anne found a small gathering at Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman's \"rather stupid on the whole.\" Mr. Ebenezer Bailey called to inquire \"if we should be willing to take Adeline & Ellen [his daughters?] to board for a while. Anne reports on preachers. \"Mr. [John] Pierpont has come out boldly and decidedly.\""
