notes
"Holograph, signed. Anne sends the Liberator, which she approves, except for [Charles C.] Burleigh's account of the mob. The Liberator has been forced to move, but is \"somewhere or other printing away.\" Mrs. Maria Weston Chapman went with [John E.?] Fuller, [Joseph] Southwick, and [Joseph] Tillson to see George Thompson, who was obliged to leave Lynn and is staying near Salem at the house of a friend of the cause, named Spencer. Describes the preparations Spencer has made to flee with Thompson in case of alarm. As Maria hopes that Thompson will be able to come to Weymouth, Anne exhorts Mary to go on stirring up the [Weymouth?] Emancipation Society. Rumors that Thompson has sailed for England, that he was in Newport disguised as a woman, etc. are believed in Boston. \"There is great fear among the brethren...Amasa Walker has flinched altogether...The Deacon (John Gulliver) is, I think, a perfect coward.\" Anne does not know where to go to church. Brother [Henry C.?] Wright at the Mission House preached the only suitable sermon. Mrs. Maria W. Chapman continues to be in a state of great enjoyment. [Richard] Fletcher was in the mob, not \"aiding and abetting but standing still with a pleased expression.\" Anne reports the death of John Grew and various business and domestic matters. Mentions that the coachman who took Garrison to goal presented his bill, \"which was paid without a word.\" A small part of the second leaf is torn out."
