She attributes the difficulty in the way of the New Bedford Anti-Slavery Society to the Quakerism of its president, Joseph Congdon. Deborah comments: \"Quakerism unfits a man for action. I think, just as transcendentalism does.\" Deborah's heart warms to \"dear [John A.] Collins.\" She urges Caroline Weston to begin her journal and to read Sir Charles Grandison [by Samuel Richarson] for inspiration."
