"Holograph, signed. Hervey Eliphaz Weston was quite sick on Thanksgiving day. He has been to West Rock and Judges' Cave. He describes the cave in which (William) Goffey and (Edward) Whalley lived for a number of years. He refers to a book about them by the \"old president [Ezra] Stiles.\" Hervey E. Weston says that \"poor Fletcher is sick yet,\" and has inquired \"how soon is your sister coming.\" There was a commotion in the college yard by five or six fellows, who were \"acting more like mad than anything else,\" the cause being two southerners \"with their hands full of Abolition tracts and newspapers and a number of others of the same stamp cursing and swearing\" and threatening to tar and feather Pierce, \"the fellow who distributed them.\" A meeting called by \"the Bully Bennet\" came to nothing. The southerners were obliged to withdraw their resolutions. They tried to hiss at a fellow who spoke an abolition piece in the chapel, but could not. Hervey E. Weston is geting on well in his lessons."
