"Holograph. This letter is apparently a rough draft, with paragraph, sentences, and words crossed out and deleted. Maria Weston Chapman protests to James Sloan Gibbons that \"not one of the friends here ever heard a syllable to the disadvantage of your office.\" Chapman was told that at a business session of the [American Anti-Slavery Society's] meeting, it was determined \"to dismiss an untrustworthy unfit person, but that of his unfitness they knew nothing except from yourself & Abby Kelly in the meeting. They honestly supposed that the ruling clanship was here in Boston, ...\" Chapman tries to assure Gibbons that he and his family's service to the cause is appreciated."
