notes
"Holograph. While spending the day with Henrietta Sargent, Anne W. Weston had an agreeable talk with William Adam, who came down to answer John Quincy Adams, and will lecture in sundry towns, including New Bedford. Dr. (William Ellery) Channing called in his pastoral capacity on Mary Gray Chapman, trying to persuade her to go to some church, or at least to have friends hold a parlor meeting, with Wendell Phillips preaching. Mrs. Maria W. Chapman \"excommunicated his church,\" and Mary G. Chapman mortified Dr. Channing by praising Theordore Parker. R. D. Tucker died of apoplexy. At a meeting of the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society, a Miss Idler from the South joined the Society and \"bore a very violent & thorough testimony.\" Anne W. Weston, Mary G. Chapman, and Wendell Phillips heard Professor Eames of New York lecture before the Diffusion Society. She attended a revival held by Jacob Knapp at the Bowdoin Square (Baptist) Church, and was disappointed because she expected something queer. She gives news of Warren Weston. She asks that Abby Osgood lend her Manzoni's \"Promessi Sposi.\" The evangelist Jacob Knapp, who is mentioned in the letter, began his mission at the Bowdoin Street Baptist Church on Jan. 9, 1842. See: \"Autobiography of Elder Jacob Knapp,\" New York, 1868, p. 133. See Call No. Ms.A.9.2 v.17, p.33 for Anne W. Weston's discovery that she did not hear Knapp, but another minister, at this time."
