"Holograph, signed. This letter is concerned with a slave boy Martin, who was thrown upon the care of Ellis Gray Loring. Mr. G. Soward of the Hopedale community offered to adopt him and make him a member of the community. Last summer Martin went to Hopedale. Mr. Soward has informed Ellis G. Loring that \"Martin exerts an unfavorable influence & sets a bad example to their children---that they are unwilling he should remain there longer.\" Ellis G. Loring fears that \"his moral habits are in some way injured.\" He requests Caroline Weston to ascertain whether he could obtain for Martin a seaman's apprenticeship or the like on board a whaling or other vessel in New Bedford.
