Maria Weston Chapman writes to Anne Warren Weston: \"We have had to bestir ourselves to raise our society's pledge for standard, & have got $50. of it at just the places where we should have looked for the Liberty Bell. So, if you can, raise a little for that.\" Maria Chapman is enclosing the first proof of \"our report.\" A beautiful sketch of a bell by Chapman is being sent to Philadelphia to be cut in brass for the cover (of the Liberty Bell). Wendell and Ann Terry Phillips are in their house. Maria Chapman inveighs against the baseness of Joshua Leavitt, his use of the Emancipator to destroy the true anti-slavery principles, and then stealing it. Maria Weston Chapman's postscript reads: \"Garrison must be made to see that he can't have Leavitt (defendants?) & honest people too, for friends.\" This letter was written on the blank pages of a printed, circular letter by Maria Weston Chapman, announcing the \"Ninth Massachusetts Anti-Slavery Fair,\" during Christmas week, 1842."
