notes
"Holograph, signed. Richard Davis Webb writes to Anne Warren Weston: \"I am never more disposed to hold up my head and feel as if I had a little right to be conceited than when one of your faction writes me.\" Webb likes Anne W. Weston's report of the bazaar. He explains the reason for charging freight against the Boston society: \"We are a very poor people & the older I grow the more entirely I am sure of it.\" He discusses James Haughton in relation to temperance and to abolition. Haughton intends \"to countenance Dr. [Orville] Dewey in his new born zeal for the cause.\" Webb agrees that Haughton is a saint, but insists \"that he is nevertheless a terrible proser both as an author and an orator.\" Webb wishes that he had news of the Anne W. Weston's \"French sisters\" and of Wendell Phillips. The best that Richard D. Webb has lately read or heard (on the cause) is \"a sermon from [Thomas Wentworth] Higginson a Unitarian minister.\" Also with the same Call No. Ms.A.9.2 v.24, p.61, is an account of expenses on behalf of the Boston Ladies Anti-Slavery Society, with a note by Richard Davis Webb to Maria Weston Chapman, Dublin, Feb., 2, 1849. Richard D. Webb requests Robert F. Walcutt to pay Henry C. Wright a sum, which he is to charge Maria W. Chapman. On the verso, there is a receipt signed by Henry C. Wright, and these notations: \"Boston, Feb. 26, 1849. Rec'd the written balance of [pounds] 6.10--($31.20).\" And on \"27 Feb. 1849-- P[aye]d $75/100 for bring'g boxes from 294 Wash'n St. to 21 Cornhill. Rec'd by Mr. May, 2nd Mar. 1849.\""
