notes
"Holograph. This unsigned letter was presumably written by Richard Davis Webb to Miss Hateful W. Parkins. Hateful W. Parkins was in reality one of the Weston sisters; most likely it was Caroline Weston. In this letter, Richard Davis Webb mentions a mistake about a letter to a Mrs. Eddy. Webb expresses his gratitude for friendship. He mentions the visit of Miss Henzel and her \"American sympathies.\" He reflects on orthodoxy. He commends the leading article in the last issue of the Edinburgh Review, which he thinks is \"powerful against the Parkerites.\" Richard D. Webb gives his views on the Old Testament. Webb said: \"Much of the Psalms are revolting with their curses and bitterness.\" He finished reading Southey's Life of John Wesley. \"In a certain credulousness, purity of heart and life and gladsomeness I was sometimes reminded of Garrison.\" He tells of William Lloyd Garrison's 28-page letter to Elizabeth Pease [Nichol] about the change in his religious views. He admires Eliza Wigham because, though very orthodox, \"she is still a staunch Garrisonian.\" He thinks it unlikely that George Thompson will visit the United States. He heard that William Wells Brown was expected in Darlington. \"He owes us nearly 200 dollars for an edition of his book...\" Richard Davis Webb wishes Caroline Weston to thank Mrs. Eliza Lee Cabot Follen for her letters. In regards to Mrs. Follen, Richard D. Webb comments that \"her experience with the Unitarian ministers is what I would have expected.\" A letter from James Martineau to the Estlins was \"as shamefully proslavery and time serving as anything from beyond the Atlantic.\" Joseph Barker has returned from the United States, \"delighted with the country.\""
