notes
"Holograph, signed. Richard Davis Webb encloses a copy of the Declaration of Sentiments and Constitution of the Nonresistance Society. He admires Maria Weston Chapman's pluck in contemplating a French translation of these douments. Webb said: \"This invasion of the Roman republic with the consent of the National Assembly is enough to disgust one...\" He wonders what the French are saying about Louis Napoleon. Webb comments: \"His ruthless uncle... never did anything half so cruel & evil as the invasion of Rome.\" Webb does not regret the loss of General Bugeaud. \"How your sisters will enjoy their trip down the Rhine!\" Webb's heart was warmed by reading the Standard, the speeches delivered at the Annual Meeting in New York. Webb feels as if all other reading were poor in comparison with the Standard and the Liberator. He wishes that [James Russell] Lowell would be more particular about the quality of poetry he publishes in the Standard. Richard and Anne Allen may call on Maria Weston Chapman in Paris; as they are prosperous and childless, they could do much for the anti-slavery cause. Webb's test for an American is to ask: \"Is he an Abolitionist? If he be not, I cannot care for him.\" Webb discusses the attitude of children toward causes. There is still much misery in the poorer parts of Ireland. Webb received a letter from Anne Warren Weston saying that William Lloyd Garrison feels the loss of his little boy very acutely."
