notes
"Holograph, signed. Richard Davis Webb doubts if William Lloyd Garrison, who leaves home today, will be received with the same eclat as Elihu Burritt, \"who is more level to the capacity of the crowd---his 50 languages make them stare,\" and the measure of his philanthropy is enough for them. The English people don't like those who try to force them to think. Richard D. Webb thinks that the National Anti-Slavery Standard is not equal to what it was before Sydney H. Gay was married. [Sydney H. Gay married Elizabeth Neall in 1845.] However, William Henry Channing's speech at the convention is worth a year's subscription. He mentions two excellent letters from Frederick Douglass in the Liberator. Anne Allen writes that stirred up by the Free Church excitement, Frederick Douglass surpassed himself in Dublin. Richard D. Webb characterizes Joseph Sturge. He comments: \"If J. Sturge had heard Douglass speak as I have heard him he would not touch him with a pair of tongs.\" In Belfast, a Rev. Smith from the Carolinas tried to injure Douglass by calumnies with placards which read: \"Send back the nigger.\" George Thompson thinks that a private assembly of anti-slavery people holding Maria Weston Chapman's views is preferable in London to a convention. Richard D. Webb agrees."
