"Holograph, signed. Samuel Joseph May encloses the Hancock seal as his contribution to the anti-slavery fair and hopes that it will bring in 50 or 100 dollars. It belonged to the first republican governor of Massachusetts, and was for several years worn by Samuel J. May's father. It is Samuel J. May's wish that the proceeds should be applied directly to the payment of Mrs. Lydia Maria Child's salary or to be divided between Mrs. Child's and Mr. Garrison's salary in equal portions."
