"Holograph, signed with initials. Maria Weston Chapman went to Ann [Phillips?]'s last night as per agreement. Wendell [Phillips] was at Abington. Two young men, Lebarnes and Eldridge, mounted guard in the parlor, \"Phebe running between Ann & the men.\" Chapman describes the unpacking of a box addressed to Mr. Wendell Phillips, which \"might be a box of detonating powder,\" and which actually contained a dead cat. She found Lebarnes a very sensible fellow. The newspapers called Lebarnes John Brown's son who walked next to Wendell Phillips. Chapman said: \"These men have all the agreeable excitement of Schillers Robbers (wish the comfort of thinking they are maintaining calm & order, & serving freedom & humanity--) of course.\" Wendell came home at 9 a.m. The country people did not know there had been a mob. Chapman tells of her immediate plans. She reports on a dispute with Mary, who disagreed with Mrs. Chapman's claim that the house was hers, insisting that it belonged to the children."
