notes
"Holograph, signed. In this letter, Mary Anne Estlin wrote: \"Pray send Mr. Ja[me]s Grant (of the M[orning] Advertiser) a stylish Liberty Bell with a few lines of flattering gratitude from yourself.\" Estlin includes a list of names of other desirable recipients of the Liberty Bell. She discusses some controversial matter of policy which cannot, however, be clearly understood, since part of the letter is missing and damaged. [The bottom part of page 1 of this manuscript is missing, and the upper left corner of page 2 is mutilated.] Mary A. Estlin offers suggestions for the Bazaar Gazette; she wishes that emphasis is placed on the catholicity of the American Anti-Slavery Society's platform and on its fidelity to its original constitution. She suggests that the \"Declaration of Sentiment\" adopted at the formation of the society be included as it has \"elicited so much enthusiasm.\" She sends a journal containing an \"amusing report\" of an anti-slavery meeting recently here. The journal \"being an organ of the high Church party views the whole proceeding with supreme contempt,\" and gives it a far less partial account than the Mercury, which we have also sent to Boston. Estlin said: \"Mr. Davis, a chief actor, was a foe of Miss [Caroline] Weston's but his tool Mr. Kerry was Mrs. Chapman's special favorite.\""
