notes
"Holograph. This is a rough draft of a letter presumably by Maria Weston Chapman to Thomas Clarkson. The letter appears to be written on scrap paper. Maria Weston Chapman explains why an abolitionist cannot take an oath to support the constitution, which would thereby prevent him from serving in Congress. She discusses the various opinions held by abolitionists in regard to the right political procedure for their cause. On the verso of the last leaf of this manuscript, there is a separate letter by Maria Weston Chapman to Mrs. Seaman(?). It is a note of thanks, dated Oct. 13th."
